PhD: 3 years full-time; 5 years part-time. MPhil: 2 years full-time; 3 years part-time
Research Proposal
Applicants need not submit a detailed research proposal with their application, but should indicate which area of research they wish to pursue and/or the names of staff members they would be interested in working with.
Entry Qualification
Good degree or equivalent experience. These are in addition to the General Entrance Requirements.
Departmental Support and Training for Research Students
All research students have a supervisor who is expert in their subject, and who will advise them regularly on their research, as well as a Director of Research Programme who provides additional guidance and pastoral support. Research students can also consult other departmental academic staff for advice on their research.
All research students are provided with:
- their own research space (desk area, lab bench, and fume cupboard space)
- access to research equipment and facilities
- access to computers and IT equipment
- photocopying and inter-library loan facilities.
Training is given on use of equipment and IT and computer-based literature searching
Research students:- attend regular departmental research seminars, group meetings and conferences to enhance their knowledge in appropriate areas
- attend training courses throughout their PhD to support and develop their research
- may help support undergraduate teaching through employment as lab demonstrators
- may be able to undertake research placements
- receive relevant safety information and training
